Traditional hand-knotting on a rug loom

The Rug Center / Antique Rug Restoration

Preserve the craft. Respect the original.

An antique rug is more than a floor covering. It carries the work of its weavers and the history of the people who lived with it. The Rug Center approaches restoration with attention to original material, structure, pattern, and the character that age has created.

Craftsmanship. Character. Care.

01 / Antique Rug Restoration

Decide what should be preserved

We begin with condition, not a promise to make an antique look new. Tell us whether your priority is display, daily use, family preservation, or preparation for sale. We explain the difference between stabilization and more extensive restoration.

02

Detailed textile work

Depending on inspection, work may involve reweaving, reknotting, reconstruction of missing sections, end protection, or edge restoration. Matching weave, yarn, and color takes judgment; the scope and likely appearance are discussed before work begins.

Careful examination of a rug
Every rug begins a different conversation.

03 / Antique Rug Restoration

Care for vulnerable pieces

Old repairs, brittle foundations, dye instability, and missing borders can change the plan. Do not apply adhesive backing or attempt aggressive spot treatment before assessment. Photograph loose fragments and keep them with the rug.

04

A thoughtful next step

Send front and back photographs, close-ups of damage, dimensions, and any history you know. We can begin with a conversation and arrange inspection at our Mountain View showroom. Timing depends on the extent of the work.

Before you begin

A few thoughtful
answers.

Speak with us →
Is a very damaged antique worth restoring?

Possibly. We discuss structural feasibility, intended use, sentimental importance, and cost. Restoration is not a guarantee of increased market value.

Will you change the design or colors?

The proposed scope is agreed before work starts. Restoration aims to respect the existing piece rather than redesign it.

Can you assess a rug with missing borders?

Yes. Send photographs of the whole rug and the missing areas so we can discuss the next step.

Tell us about your rug or room

Share the dimensions, your city, and what you need. We will reply to discuss the next step. An inquiry does not confirm an appointment or reserve a rug.
