Monsoon season, with the addition of global temperatures rising and causing drastic glacial melt in the Himalayas, has caused mass flood events in my family’s home country of Pakistan. Despite contributing to less than half of 1% of global pollution, Pakistan is among the countries most devastatingly affected by climate change.
This is a catastrophic event. People are dying from drowning, houses collapsing, disease spreading in the water, viruses such as dengue, and even from things as treatable as snake bites - all due to these floods. The number of deaths has so far totaled between 1,200 - 1,500 people already. 33 million people have been affected across 80 districts, with millions of houses damaged - many of them completely gone. Massive numbers of livestock have been lost, and the economy is in chaos. The living victims are suffering life or death situations due to lack of aid and unequipped infrastructure. The floods have not yet ceased, they are ongoing.
Outside of our own personal donations, we at the Rug Center wish to encourage others to aid in this emergency. We have a variety of hand-made rugs selected for donation; their entire proceeds will be going directly to Pakistani charities of the customers’ choice. Please message us for more information!
